| The
importance of an Individual's image and reputation
|
|
"Reputation
is a factor of performance and perception,
and they must be balanced. A cleverly thought
and effectively executed PR exercise can
greatly raise the stakes in favour of the
person "perceived" to be good."
|
|
Much
of the time, organizational reputation is
based on the perception of its chief executive.
If your company's public perception rests
on the view of the CEO, you must have a
leader who is a person of "unquestioned
character, impeccable reputation and great
expertise," or you must position
the CEO to meet those requirements.
|
|
Of
course, one of corporate world's greatest
problems is finding time for the CEO to
do those public relations tasks while still
satisfying the demands of finance, operations,
management and the other necessities of
running the business. We reproduce below
some excerpts from a recent seminar:
|
Building
a reputation--at least a positive one--can
take time, but what steps can you take
to start that construction?
"You could create a list of principles"
"In
the case of a disaster, you must be upfront
with the public. `I'm the leader. I'm
responsible. I'm here. I'm sorry' are
statements the CEO can make to help start
the rebuilding of the organization's credibility
during and after a major problem."
Probably the most important thing a CEO
can do to enhance his organization's credibility
is to foster and build relationships.
That means making time to attend functions,
meeting people at all levels of the community,
meeting and talking with employees and
dealing with the media.
"It's important that the public relations
personnel work hard to convince the people
running the other important areas that
it's worth it to have the CEO spend time
on PR,"
"The use of third-party endorsers
can be a winning strategy."
|
|
These
were the thoughts raised at a recent management
seminar held in the United States. The importance
of positioning an Individual, from all walks
of life, is regarded today of utmost importance
and vital to the overall success of a business
entity, an ideal, a political agenda or
even an event!
